ABOUT THIS KRAKAUER PIANO:

This piano fits is a perfect example of all things Krakauer. It's beautiful, it's well made and the design is timeless. There is no particle board and the veneers (yes, all pianos are veneered) are so thick that a refinisher could mindlessly sand for hours and never blow through the veneer. And it's not because the Amish didn't have the machinery to mill a veneer 1/32nd of an inch thick. Well, OK, they didn't, but it's not like they wanted to do it. They chose to build pianos well -- well enough to earn a Cordogan's "They Don't Make 'Em Like They Used To" Award. Note how the lid opens like a grand. Disclaimer: We are not responsible for the picture frames that slide off the top. We ARE however, responsible for how much better the piano sounds when the lid is open.

HISTORY :
Krakauer is what we'd like to call a "sleeper" brand. From 1870 until 1985, Krakauer quietly existed, making up to a couple thousand pianos a year for over a hundred years in the heart of Ohio's Amish country. To give you a production comparison, Steinway's annual production of 5000 handmade pianos is considered "limited". Yamaha can make well over 100,000 pianos a year. Often nicknamed "The Amish Piano" (for obvious reasons), this little known handmade piano is often of unusually high quality. They don't surface often, but when they do, they're always interesting, charming, tastefully designed and they sell quickly. As with most wonderful American piano brand names that went out of business, the Krakauer name has since been purchased and is being slapped on a Chinese piano. "Have ye no shame?"
