ABOUT
KNABE PIANOS: |
Knabe is among the top 5 most cherished names in American pianos. It joins
Steinway, Mason & Hamlin, Chickering and Baldwin as being the top
brands of yesteryear. Knabe pianos were originally made in Baltimore and
at one point, they were even owned by Chickering and Mason & Hamlin.
The company was founded in 1859, and built just under 200,000 pianos before
their doors closed in 1983. They were highly regarded handmade instruments
whose limited production was roughly half that of Steinway. To put that
all in perspective, Steinway’s production is roughly 1/20th that
of say, Yamaha! After 1983, the Knabe name – like most other American
brand names, got kicked around by various companies and eventually landed
in the hands of Samick, who now builds Knabe pianos in Korea. |
