ABOUT
CHICKERING PIANOS: |
Chickering was America’s 1st piano manufacturer, and they lasted all the way until 1982, when they closed their Rochester, NY factory forever. Original Chickerings were heralded as being high quality, handmade pianos with some of the most elegant case styles that have even been made. The piano is of such cultural significance to America that their hand-written serial number logs are on display at the Smithsonian. So what
happened to Chickering? The same thing that happened to pretty much
every other American piano manufacturer. They closed their doors, primarily
due to formidable overseas competition. Baldwin since bought the name
and has been demoralizing it ever since – first by applying the
“Chickering” name to B-grade Baldwin grands that weren’t
good enough to bear the Baldwin name…then later by putting it
on lackluster Wurlitzers (which Baldwin also owns)…and most recently,
they’ve been putting it on (gulp) pianos made by Samick in Korea.
It’s a shame since Chickering was once a formidable competitor
of Steinway and is probably third on the list of most cherished American
made pianos. Founder Jonas Chickering surely never dreamed his family
name would eventually find its way onto the foreign-made pianos that
were ultimately responsible for the demise of his esteemed piano company! |
